SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Thursday the state will receive an additional $1.3 million via the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act that will be used for survivors of domestic violence.
Pritzker said that was in addition to the $1 million of the state funding that was allocated to the cause earlier in May.
“Thanks to the creative team at the Illinois Department of Human Services, Illinoisans experiencing domestic violence now have greater access to alternative housing initiatives, transportation assistance, food, and supplies,” he said.
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced 2,268 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 87 new deaths.
The statewide totals rose to 102,686 cases and 4,607 deaths.
Labs took 29,307 specimens from Wednesday to Thursday. The statewide rolling 7-day positive rate was at 14%.
Pritzker spoke on capacity limits as they pertain to places of worship as the state moves to phase three of the Restore Illinois plan.
“I think it’s important for people to get together and worship, but we have to follow the rules,” he said.
“Until we know what the effect is of having large groups together, we’re taking a gradual approach.”
Pritzker expressed concern federally-funded pandemic extensions aren’t enough to help individuals.
“I see the $600 extra people got and are getting, and even that, on top of existing unemployment benefits, doesn’t seem to be enough, and when you think about the amount of time it looks like economists are saying it might take us to get back to normal, I’m concerned with the typical number of weeks allowed, it won’t be enough,” he said.
