EAST PEORIA, Ill. — It appears East Peoria residents’ generosity is under attack by a few Grinches.
The East Peoria Police Department on Wednesday reported a recent barrage of phone scammers posing as representatives of the department, soliciting funds.
EPPD issued a statement saying it is not conducting any fundraising campaigns, and if it were, it would not typically do so over the phone.
Residents who want to donate to the department, the statement continued, are encouraged to do so at the department, in person.
“Remember, criminals seek times when they know that people are in the giving spirit such as holidays and after a disaster. Their goal is to separate you from your hard-earned money, by exploiting your emotional desire to give,” the statement concluded.
