SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois Legislative Black Caucus said during a press conference on Sunday, now is the time for police and criminal justice reforms.
Senator Elgie Sims, of Chicago, said it’s more clear than ever that change is needed.
“Our communities have stood by and watched activities take place over years. And, have been increasingly more frustrated by inaction,” Sims said.
Illinois law enforcement officials have said the reforms are being rushed, but Sims said nine public hearings have been held discussing these proposals.
Sims adds that discussions are ongoing and changes may be made to the current bills, but that he still plans to get Illinois House Bill 163 passed before the new General Assembly is sworn in on Wednesday, Jan. 13.
