PEORIA, Ill. – The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Peoria says a federal jury has convicted a Chicago man of trying to defraud a local bank.
The office says Christopher Simmons, 40, was convicted Tuesday of of three counts of Financial Institution Fraud, and one count of Aggravated Identity Theft, and will be sentenced next February.
Prosecutors say a loan was obtained from Citizens Equity Federal Credit Union totaling $49,900 for the purchase of an Audi from Simmons that he did not own.
After Simmons got that money, prosecutors say he used a stolen security number along with a false address and earnings documents to try and get loans and credit cards from CEFCU.
Simmons could face up to 30 years in prison when he’s sentenced. The man who got the loan already pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison.
