MORTON, Ill. — One person was injured late Tuesday morning in a house fire in Morton.
The fire, that also left a dog dead, happened just before noon near the intersection of Clark and McArthur, just south of the Kroger plaza.
Flames spread throughout the home and into the attic. The smoke was visible from the nearby highway.
Morton Fire Chief Joe Kelly told news partner 25 News that crews had to cut into the roof to get to the flames and vent out the smoke.
“There was a pretty significant amount of fire in the attic space so those ventilation holes let that smoke and fire out of the top,” Kelly said. “We can get the bottom side and kind of get to that.”
Kelly said the fire caused thousands of dollars of damage, and the people living there will have to find another place to live.
The person who was injured is expected to make a full recovery.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
