WASHINGTON, Ill. — Washington, Illinois’ local economy is made up of many small, locally-owned businesses.
A few of them have struggled financially to the point that they’re closing their doors.
Washington Mayor Gary Manier says the good news is, overall, most of the city’s shops are doing pretty well.
“We’re really fortunate and blessed that we haven’t seen a lot of closures from the pandemic. And, it seems everyone figured out ways to go online and have the customers come to the curbside for pick up, I know a lot of the businesses on the Square have done that,” Manier said.
Businesses nationwide are dealing with some downturn from higher gas prices and supply chain issues.
That’s why Manier says it’s important to “Shop Local” to keep Washington businesses, like those on the Square, viable and open.
Mayor Gary Manier says in particular, shops on the Square are their bread and butter.
“It’s been our backbone, I mean, our founder William Holland started the Square, and built the town out from it,” Manier said.
Manier said to make sure Washington businesses stay open, everyone needs to shop local…not just during the holidays, but all year.
