SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court is ready to call it a career.
The state’s high court says Chief Justice Ann Burke will retire at the end of the November, about a month after her term as Chief Justice ends, and a few weeks after the November election.
Burke has been a justice for 16 years, and while her term as Chief Justice was difficult because of the COVID-19 pandemic, she says she’s loved serving on the high court.
First District Appellate Justice Joy Cunningham will fill the remaining two years of Burke’s term on the Illinois Supreme Court, becoming the second black woman to serve, following Lisa Holder White, appointed to the court just this year.
