PEORIA, Ill. – Sure, Peoria County has FLOWN a flag. But it wasn’t an OFFICIAL county flag.
“I know we have something that flies over the courthouse,” said Andrew Rand, Peoria County Board Chairman (D-Dist. 4). “It’s got…the seal of Peoria County, but we don’t have a true flag. There’s a difference between a piece of white cloth with the county seal on it and a flag.
Peoria County Board Chair Andrew Rand, unveiling the county’s new flag Saturday, designed by Peorian Aaron Broomfield — featuring a sun in the upper left corner, and the Illinois River in the lower right.
“I just wanted to keep the flag as simple as possible, but incorporate as much of Peoria as I could,” said Broomfield.
Among the rules for a contest that led to the new flag were to keep it simple, and only use a few colors.
A number of local artists and others judged the flag designs, whittling them down to the final three the public voted on.
The winning flag was officially unveiled at the Peoria Riverfront Museum, as it marks its 10th anniversary this weekend. Why the museum? The county leases the building to the museum for $1 a year.
