PEORIA, Ill. — A weekend gun buyback event in Peoria had to be cut short because of sky-high demand, according to Peoria Police.
PPD held a citywide gun buyback opportunity on Saturday — no questions asked — and provided gift cards worth up to $500 for those who turned in their unwanted guns.
According to 25 News, it took only an hour for roughly $17,000 dollars in gifts to be handed out and dozens of unwanted guns to be collected.
In all, police say they collected 92 weapons in that time, including two assault style weapons, 37 handguns, 25 rifles and 27 shotguns.
One was a ghost gun.
Of course, all of those guns will be destroyed following the event.
Funding for the gift card exchange was provided by a private donor who indicated more such events may be coming in the future.
