SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois Gov. J-B Pritzker is hopeful that state lawmakers will be able to make some tweaks to the Safe-T Act during this week’s fall veto session.
The session is set to end on Thursday, but the governor thinks a trailer bill can be passed by then, clarifying the law that ends cash bail on January 1, 2023.
“Changes to the Safe-T Act certainly should include making clear what the purpose of no cash bail is, making sure that people are not, in counties across Illinois, led to believe that they should be flinging the jail doors open January 1, that’s not what the legislation says,” Pritzker says.
Lawmakers, prosecutors and others are working hard to reach an agreement this week before the veto session ends, Pritzker says.
State lawmakers are also expected to vote on an agreement to pay off $1 billion in debt from the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program.
