SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The situation surrounding COVID-19 in Illinois continues to improve.
That’s according to the latest data from the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Officials there say now only 20 counties are at an elevated level of transmission of the disease, down from 28 last week. What’s more, all 20 counties are at “medium” — none are at a high level.
The tri-counties once again this week are at low levels.
“It is good news that COVID-19 community levels are continuing to decline in Illinois, with no counties listed at high level,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra, in a news release. “We are seeing a gradual increase in the rate of the XBB.1.5 ‘Kraken’ variant in the Midwest and Illinois compared to last week. At this moment, it is not leading to an increase in hospitalizations.”
Nearly 11,000 new cases were reported in the last week — about even from the week before.
Of those cases, 999 are in the hospital, with 117 in ICU’s.
