PEORIA, Ill. – A new cancer treatment center in Peoria aims to have the latest in battling the disease.
OSF HealthCare on Tuesday announced the creation of the OSF Breakthrough Treatment Center.
The OSF Breakthrough Treatment Center promises to provide hard-to-access clinical trials, medical advances, and biotech and novel therapies. The facility will be part of the OSF Cancer Institute that’s currently under construction.
OSF HealthCare President Sister Diane Marie McGrew says the facility can provide hope to people, including her, who’s battling ovarian cancer.
“I’ll be in line looking for breakthrough treatment options, as well. And having the option to be able to do that here in Peoria just takes a burden off of my shoulders,” McGrew said.
McGrew says the center can provide unlimited options to those looking to have unique cancers treated.
Chief Operating Officer Mike Cruz says one benefit to the facility is keeping people in central Illinois.
“We have access to trials and taking care of our patients that we ordinarily wouldn’t. We send patients everywhere, some to Texas to Minnesota or some New York or some to California, some to Belgium because there’s a protocol, it’s only available in Belgium. And so that happens today,” Cruz said.
Cruz adds that Peoria is ideal because it’s a centralized location to bigger cities like Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis.
