PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria NAACP chapter says it supports a message that the national organization put out over the weekend discouraging travel to Florida.
The national organization issued a travel advisory over the weekend, claiming that thanks to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, that state has become “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals.”
The NAACP’s Florida State Conference suggested the travel ban.
Peoria chapter president, the Reverend Marvin Hightower, tells 25 News he thought the country was much farther ahead than that, and doesn’t want to see similar action taken in Illinois.
“It’s really a revelation of how far we haven’t come as a country. We thought we were much more ahead, but come to find out that we’re not,” said Hightower.
