CHICAGO, Ill. – Governor JB Pritzker has signed into law a measure he says threatens gun manufacturers and marketers with legal action if they exhibit what he says are unsafe marketing practices.
“…who market guns to children under the age of 18, or who promote guns referencing illegal use like showing an ad of someone using a gun for paramilitary purposes,” said Pritzker, Saturday.
Pritzker signed the bill in a rare Saturday event for him at what was called the “Gun Sense University” – a conference held in Chicago by a number of anti-gun and anti-violence groups.
“The State of Illinois will now be allowed to take legal action against firearm industry players that endanger the public safety and health of our people,” said Pritzker.
It clarifies, the State says, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s ability to use the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act to prosecute or file lawsuits against such manufacturers.
“No single industry should be given a free pass to engage in unlawful, unfair or deceptive conduct,” said Attorney General Kwame Raoul, in a news release.
Pritzker recently signed a similar law against what are called “crisis pregnancy centers” claiming they deceive people out of having abortions, but that was almost instantly subject to a federal First Amendment violation lawsuit.
