WASHINGTON, Ill. (25 News) – The mayor of Washington will not make a run for higher office in Springfield.
25 News reports that Gary Manier has decided to not run for the State Senate 53rd District seat. The district covers portions of Peoria, Woodford, and Tazewell Counties.
The seat is being vacated by the retirement of incumbent Republican Tom Bennett.
In a statement…Manier says the commitment that he would have needed to run for State Senate was not compatible with his commitments to serve Washington. He continued to say that each candidate on the ballot would be well-qualified to serve in Springfield.
He is also not ruling out a future run for the state senate.
Three Republicans have filed to run in the primary, including Jesse Faber of Pontiac, Chris Balkema of Channahon, and Susan Wynn Bence of Watseka. Mike Kirkton of Gridley had announced his intentions to run but has yet to file paperwork to be on the ballot.
Monday at 5:00 P.M. is the deadline to file to be on the ballot in the March primary next year in Illinois.
