SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Police will step up patrols to try and keep the roads safe to start the new year.
The increased presence during New Year’s celebrations will focus on drunk driving, distracted driving, speeding, and seat belts, among other traffic laws.
The Illinois Department of Transportation says 1,213 people have lost their lives in traffic crashes this year, through December 14th, up 11 from the same timeframe in 2022.
Illinois State Police say they’ll have more officers out on the roads.
“During this time of year when more people are out celebrating, ISP has additional troopers on the road working to stop drunk and dangerous drivers before they cause a crash,” said ISP Division of Patrol Col. Chris Owen.
State officials suggest people designate a sober driver at gatherings and not letting friends or family drive impaired. Other options state leaders suggest include public transportation or rideshare apps.
