GLENVIEW, Ill. — It’s an end of an era. One of the nation’s last video rental companies is closing its doors.
Family Video President Keith Hoogland made the announcement Monday, saying the company is closing all 250 of its remaining locations.
In a news release, Hoogland said the impact of COVID-19, not only in foot traffic but also in the lack of movie releases, pushed the company to make the difficult decision.
“We are very thankful to have been able to provide entertainment for many family movie nights,” Hoogland said.
Founded in 1978, the video chain started 2020 with 510 locations, but closed about half of the remaining stores by the summer.
At one time, Family Video boasted 800 locations across the Midwest and 10,000 employees.
