SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Peoria area has been experiencing very cold temperatures, and more are expected this week.
Alex Erwin, with the National Weather Service in Springfield, said that while what we’ve seen over the weekend could be called a polar vortex, it’s hard to define.
Erwin said the NWS is more concerned with with the Peoria area will be facing in the coming days.
“We’re more focused just on whether we’ll be dealing with artic air than whether we’re experiencing a polar vortex or not,” Erwin said.
With the increased snow and ice accumulation throughout the area, rapid melting could lead to flooding.
Currently, flooding is not expected.
“If we do get a very quick snap back to warm temperatures, flooding could be a concern, right now I’m not seeing anything that should be of concern in Central Illinois,” Erwin said.
Cold temperatures, frigid wind chills and snow are all in the forecast throughout this week.
