PEORIA, Ill. – Illinois American Water says the huge water main break that occurred Saturday night in downtown Peoria is now fixed.
Officials say the work on the break was completed at Jefferson and Hamilton early Monday morning, though crews could be seen doing more work elsewhere downtown, closer to UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center.
However, crews are still working to fix a valve that was broken during the repair.
A boil order is in effect, though the utility says it only affects about 65 customers.
“For impacted customers, any tap water to be used for drinking or cooking should be brought to a rolling boil for five minutes. Water is OK for bathing, washing, and other common uses. Customers will be notified when the boil order has been lifted,” said an Illinois American Water news release.
Officials say the cause of the break will be determined once the valve and break-related work is completed.
The Peoria County Courthouse and the Peoria Public Library main branch remain closed all day.
