UPDATED 2:41 P.M.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The investigation into three people accused of helping to underreport sales tax revenue at seven Peoria gas stations they owned goes much further than that.
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office says the three people charged in Peoria County Tuesday, now also face charges in Sangamon County.
The three – 29-year-old Roger Multani, 29 of Peoria, along with 34-year-old Surinder Singh and 33-year-old Jitender Singh, both of Indianapolis – face what the AG calls “multiple counts of theft, fraud, and tax evasion.”
Raoul’s office says the three operated seven gas stations in Peoria, along with others in Xenia, Metropolis, Salem, Pickneyville, and Wayne City.
They allegedly underreported more than 50 million dollars in sales between 2019 and last year, producing nearly $4 million in tax liability, then allegedly not paying sales tax to the state.
“Fraudulent business owners who underreport their income not only cheat the (Illinois Department of Revenue) and Illinois taxpayers, but also other businesses that comply with their tax obligations and seek to compete on a level playing field,” said David Harris, Director, Illinois Department of Revenue, in a news release. “Today’s indictments demonstrate that there is a serious price to pay for this type of conduct and IDOR will continue to work closely with the Attorney General’s Office to prosecute those who break the law.”
The three will be arraigned October 26th in Peoria, and November second in Springfield. They are not in custody.
The gas stations the three owned:
- Kamla Kaur Gas Stations, 1100 N. Main St., Peoria
- Kamla Kaur Group, 9109 N. Allen St., Peoria
- Kamla Kaur Petroleum, 4310 N. Knoxville Ave and 4709 N. Sterling Ave., Peoria
- Kamla Kaur Enterprises, 3903 Baring Trace, Peoria
- Kamla Kaur Convenience, 1108 W. Main St., Peoria
- Kamla Kaur Management, 1900 N. Knoxville Ave., Peoria
- RSM Management, 710 W. Detweiller Dr., Peoria
- KKG5, 337 State Highway 32, Stewardson and 1500 Church St., Xenia, Illinois
- KKG4, 614 S. Commercial St., Harrisburg and 1117 E., Metropolis, Illinois
- KKG 2, 500 S. Broadway Ave., Salem, Illinois
- KKG 1, 113 W Green St. Centralia and 5728 State Route 154, Pickneyville
- SPM Group, 46th N. Fourth St., Albion and 107 N. Main St., Wayne City, Illinois
A news release from Raoul’s office says the three were charged by his office Wednesday in Peoria and Springfield, which is partially not true. As we’ve previously reported, a Peoria County Grand Jury filed the charges here Tuesday.
The trio could face decades in prison if convicted, as some of the charges are Class-X felonies.
